Falls Church: Raaga Indian Cuisine

The other day I saw a groupon for Raaga Indian Cuisine, quickly snatched it up and had a dinner date with my mom to try it out.

Ever since my wonderful dinner at Rasika, I have been dying to get my hands on some more Palak Chaat baby spinach lightly fried, seasoned with homemade spices. I was thrilled when I saw this on the menu. Raaga's version was a little to sweet for my taste, but this is still a very interesting dish that is worth trying.
We also got a Ragda Patties spiced potato, chick peas, tamarind date, mint chutney. Very good dish, all of the flavors were awesome
For dinner we got Palak Chaat fresh spinach, homemade cottage cheese cooked with ginger and rare spices and Lamb Rogan Jash boneless lamb cooked in a yogurt based creamy curry sauce with a blend of spices. Both were good, typical dishes. I thought the lamb dish was missing something but it was still good.
Which is served with Basmati Rice. We ordered naan on the side. Both were good, your basic naan and rice.
As always I had to order a Mango Lassi. This was sadly not very good.
Overall the meal was pretty good but our service was not. I don't know if it was because we had a groupon or what, but towards the end of our meal it was like we did not exist. We waited forever try to get our bill because none of the servers or the manager would make eye contact with us (believe me I tried). I've been to other restaurants that are just as good or better that have treated us the same with deals purchased online so I probably will not be back.

Tour of the West Wing (what we were allowed to photograph anyways)

Thanks to my awesome mother, a few friends and I were able to get in to tour the West Wing before the tours were shut down. The West Wing is full of history and it was really cool being able to see where the President works (Oval Office) and the Cabinet meeting room.

One of the things we were allowed to photograph was the Press Room. Very cool to be able to see where Obama gives his press releases, etc.

Gift of Teddy "leaving" the West Wing. I like to sing Secret Agent Man in my head when I see this. Maybe I am crazy but I think it works...kind of.

Or as Rosie stated, the Mission Impossible theme song sounds pretty darn awesome with this GIF.

Anyways it was a great experience and I am glad I got to share it with some of my friends. Check out my Christmas tour of the East Wing!!!

We, The Pizza

We, The Pizza. Perfect name for a pizza place in the DC area. Located next door to their sister restaurant Good Stuff Eatery, creator Spike Mendonson has a good thing going for him. Two popular restaurants in the bustling Capital Hill/Eastern Market area.

I met up with my friend Carrie for a late lunch. They have a pretty good lunch special, 2 slices of any pizza & a soda. You have a choice between one of the 10+ homemade sodas or fountain drink.

I decided on a regular cheese slice and a China Poblano Spicy Mexican Pie tomato sauce, mozz. free range chicken breast, peppers, onions, chipotle, cilantro, mexican spices and a splash of fresh lime. Both were pretty good, I liked the flavors of the China Poblano a lot, it was a very original slice!
Carrie got the Buffalo Chicken spicy boneless chicken wings, creamy blue cheese, mozz, miguels's hot sauce. This is one of her fav's, she has gotten this type a couple of times now.
I chose the "Dreams are made of strawberry lemonade" which was delicious and fresh. Made me think of summer. C got the "don't forget your ginger roots" which was also really good.
This was a really good, fun pizza place. They have tons of pizza choices and fun sodas. Perfect for a lunch after exploring the mall or Eastern Market.

Alexandria: Foxfire Grill

Ok, so I have to admit that what really drew me in to Foxfire was their happy hour...$3 glasses of wine.

Foxfire start off your meal by bringing you a bread basket. Normal rolls which were good and Jalapeno Cheddar rolls. Skip the normal and just ask for the jalapeno....amazing.
Not only do they have $3 wine, they have 1/2 off appetizers as well so Carrie and I decided to start off our meal with Foxfire's Smokin' Wings $9 ($4.50). These were pretty good, your standard buffalo wings.
I ordered the Foxfire's "Any way you want it" Burger made with ground beef and cheddar cheese $9caramelized onions .75. This was a good burger, cooked a little more then I would have liked but I enjoyed it. The bun was also perfection, normally I take the buns off burgers but it was wonderfully toasty and tasty.
Carrie got the Foxfire Caesar with Shrimp $14. She said it was pretty standard but good.
All in all this was a good restaurant. All of the servers/waitstaff were very friendly which made for an enjoyable dining experience. With nice staff, a great happy hour and good food this is a great place for catching up over drinks or dinner!

Georgetown: Ching Ching Cha

After our little adventure in Georgetown, Teddy and I stumbled upon a tea shop called Ching Ching Cha and decided to stop in and give it a try.
Although it is a tea house, Ching Ching Cha's does offer a few snacks and small plates. We were still full from our brunch but being the glutton I am I had to order something small. I do not recommend the Five Spice Peanuts. They were a weird texture and just not very appealing.
I ordered the Iced Jasmine Green Tea $4.50. This was very refreshing.
Teddy got a hot green tea of some sort. Another tastytea.
This was fun, relaxing experience. If you are in the area I recommend stopping by for a cup or two of tea and taking a break from the chaos that is Georgetown.

Friday Finds: Lay's New Chip Flavors

I am a sucker for advertisements, packaging, new things, etc. so when I saw these new Lay's Chips I knew I had to give them a try. I actually brought this to my friend's birthday party so everyone got to try them out.

1. Sriracha: Probably the favorite of the group. If you like sriracha then you will probably like these.
2. Garlic Cheesy Bread: These were probably my least favorite. I didn't think they really tasted like garlic bread and made me want actual garlic bread.
3. Chicken and Waffles. To me these tasted like a combo of chicken ramen and syrup. The majority of the group didn't like these except for the birthday girl who loved them.
I was not a fan of any of these. While I didn't hate any of them, I will not being buying these again. No one else had strong feelings about any of these except for that one weird friend of mine who loved the chicken and waffles ;) It was a fun test to try with a group of people but give me plain ol' BBQ or Wavy Chips any day and I'll be happy.

Has anyone tried these? What do you think about them?

Have a wonderful weekend :)

Sour Cream Mashed Potato Casserole

Yes, this really tastes as good as the picture looks. I actually created this when I was planning out the menu for my mom's birthday lunch. I needed some sort of potato dish and this is what I came up with. A little bit of heaven is what this is. The comfort of the mashed potatoes plus the awesomeness of the cheddar, sour cream and bacon make this dish hard to resist.
The second time I made this dish, I decided to add scallions to it after reading a tweet from one of the food blogs that I follow, The Cooking Actress, that she was making something with potatoes and scallions. I thought, hey why not, those would be a delicious addition. And they were folks, they were.
While I am going to list the recipe ingredients, keep in mind this is the perfect recipe to customize to your likings/what you have in your kitchen. For example I use a store bought mashed potatoes (I'm partial to Simply Potatoes) but you can easily use homemade-this would be perfect for using up leftovers. If you don't like bacon leave it off. I bet a layer of caramelized onions would be delicious in between the cheese and sour cream. Next time I want to eat way too much I may have to try this twist.

Mashed Potato Casserole

Ingredients
6 pieced of cooked bacon chopped
2 Tbsp of chopped scallions
8oz bag of shredded cheddar
24 oz Simply Potatoes mashed potatoes (I like the garlic mashed potatoes...if you cant find them just add 2 tsp garlic powder to your potatoes)
16 oz container of sour cream

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
2. In a square baking dish (9x9 or 8x8) spread mashed potatoes in pan. Then add the sour cream layer, followed by the cheese layer. Sprinkle the scallions and bacon on top.
3. Bake for about 20-25 minutes.

Tips/Comments
-You can premake this and stick it in the fridge, just add a few minutes to the cook time.
- To make this even better, you can add more bacon to it, sometimes I like to take extra cheese (about a cup) and mix it in with the potatoes before layering the pan.

Pupatella & Their New Happy Hour

Yes, this is another Pupatella review (also here, here & here). What can I say. It's pure awesomeness. I got my usual Prosciutto and Arugula. Perfection. Absolutely no complaints. Carrie got the Tomato and Artichoke. Delicious-you really can't go wrong with anything here as long as you like the toppings you're ordering.
I've never had dessert here before but Pupatella had these donuts right by the counter you order at. All I can say is save room or get it to go. They were great. I got a nutella cream filled one and C got the normal cream filled. I'm not a huge fan of donuts but these won me over.
And if this place wasn't awesome enough, they added a happy hour.
As always I will be back.

Middleburg: Market Salamander

While wine tasting Janna and I wanted to pick up something quick to eat that we could take with us to Swedenburg to eat there while enjoying a glass of wine. Market Salamander fit the bill, they have sandwiches and other goodies you can get to go.
I ordered the Hottie Virginia Ham, colby cheddar, arugula, roasted tomato, maple mustard on sourdough bread with a side of coleslaw. This sandwich was awesome minus the mustard-but I don't like mustard, just a personal preference. I liked that the coleslaw was purple, made it different from your typical slaw.
J ordered the Go Green herbed mushroom goat cheese, arugula, seasonal roasted vegetables wrapped in a spinach tortilla with a side of potato salad. She thought it was ok, nothing special.
I also decided to pick up a Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookie. For this being whole wheat it was pretty darn tasty. Still prefer white flour though.
This place is the perfect place to pick up lunch when you are on the go (aka wine tasting around the area). Not only do they have sandwiches and baked goods, but lots of cheeses, chutneys and meats so you can make yourself a nice little picnic to take with you. They also have indoor seating if you want to stay in.
